Fanwood's legally mandated recycling program is changing during the summer of 2016. After almost 30 years of our citizens taking recyclables to our Recycling Center for sorting and sale to outside vendors, a combination of hard financial times, decreasing recycling volume and increasing taxpayer funding prompted the Borough Council to approve a shared services agreement with the Plainfield Municipal Utilities Authority (PMUA) to provide curbside collection of recyclables. Below are the important points of our transition to the curbside program.

  • The last day of operation for the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Recycling center on North Avenue is Wednesday, July 27th
  • Beginning the following Wednesday, August 3rd, the recycling center will be open 2:30pm to 8pm every Wednesday to accept all recyclables including plastics, glass, aluminum, tin, cardboard, newspapers, mixed paper, electronics, clothing, motor oil, scrap metal and fluorescent bulbs. This Wednesday program will continue until curbside collection begins.
  • The curbside program will begin October 6th. In September, each home will receive a 96-gallon bin to hold all curbside recyclables which can be co-mingled. By that time, we will have a schedule established for residents to bring non-curbside items including electronics, motor oil, scrap metal and fluorescent bulbs, to our Public Works facility.
  • More detailed information will be mailed to each home prior to the September start of the curbside program

Below is an info sheet that will be mailed to every home in August. It includes the tentative collection schedule, curbside do's and don'ts and info on a smartphone app that will soon be available at no cost.
