Starting a Business in Fanwood

  • Check with the Fanwood Zoning Officer first to see if the business is allowed in the zone.
  • Submit Plans and Permit Applications (complete set), to the Construction Department, for plan review/approval.
  • Submit Business License Application to the Borough Clerk.
  • Once plans are approved and permits paid for work can begin.
  • Comply with all necessary building inspections for occupancy (Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Fire).
  • Certificate of Occupancy will be issued once all required inspections pass.

If a food establishment, the following also applies:

  • Submit a Food License Application to the Board of Health Secretary which must be approved and issued prior to opening.
  • Submit Plan for location as approved by Building Department to Health Department. Inspector will review application with applicant.
  • Health Inspector will conduct pre-operational inspection of the establishment once the customary inspections from the Building Department (Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Fire) have been completed.
  • Health Inspector will conduct final inspection for opening, rate the conditions of the premises and deem satisfactory.

Liz Jeffery

Liz Jeffery’s goal for Fanwood is to continue the Administration’s vision of a vibrant work-live-play Fanwood. In assisting the business community to make it stronger, Jeffery wants to create a center of place in Downtown Fanwood for bringing the community together by making attractive public spaces and new public programming.

Development Projects

Greater Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce (GWACC)

Active coordination has been ongoing with the GWACC. The GWACC holds 2 town wide events in Fanwood- Ladies night in early June and Fan Jam in La Grande Park in late June/July. They will also be hosting a Fanwood Speaker Series. The GWACC has established a Fanwood business Committee to work on Fanwood initiatives.

Enhanced Public relation and communications with Fanwood businesses is ongoing.
