Fanwood’s government consists of six elected Council members and an elected Mayor. All are paid $1 per year. Council members are elected for three year terms, at large, with the terms of two councilmen expiring at the end of each year. The Mayor’s term is four years and there are no term limits. The Borough of Fanwood had its first Council Meeting on October 22, 1895.

The Council is the legislative body of the municipality and may pass, adopt, amend and repeal any ordinance or where permitted, any resolution, for any purpose required for the government of the municipality, and also controls and regulates the finances of the municipality. The Council may investigate any activity of the municipality, remove any officer of the municipality for cause other than those excepted by law and shall have all the executive responsibilities of the municipality not placed by general law, in the office of the Mayor.

The Mayor and Council meet the first (agenda) and third (regular) Mondays of the month, except as noted. These meetings are open to the public and are held in the Council Chambers at Borough Hall. Official action may be taken at either the Agenda or Regular Meetings of the Mayor and Council. The meetings are broadcast live on Comcast Channel 35, Fios Channel 24 and live-streamed on the Borough’s Facebook page. They are also videotaped for replay during the month on Channel 35 and Channel 24. Council meetings may also be viewed online.
