The following tax relief programs are available to New Jersey residents if you meet certain eligibility requirements.
Senior/Disabled Deduction – $250
- Must be over 65 OR totally and permanently disabled (Physicians or Social Security certificate required)
- Annual income cannot exceed $10,000 not including Social Security
Veteran Deduction – $250
- Must have served during active war – Need DD214 to apply
- Applications for both Senior/Disabled Deduction and Veteran Deduction can be obtained from the Tax Collector.
Homestead Rebate
- In the fall of each year, you should receive an application directly from the State to apply for a homestead rebate; you are required to phone in the information.
- You are not eligible for a homestead rebate if you do not pay property taxes.
- This refund is no longer in the form of a check, it is a credit to your taxes. The State will determine which quarter gets the credit, and the Tax Collector will mail you an adjusted bill for that quarter
To qualify:
- You must be a NJ resident
- Owned and occupied home as principal residence on October 1, 2012
- Property taxes are paid
- In addition, there are income limits. The State Budget determines these limits.
Property Tax Reimbursement AKA Property Tax Freeze
- 65 or older or receiving SS disability
- Lived in NJ continuously for 10 years as a homeowner or renter
- Owned & lived in home you are claiming reimbursement for 3 years
- Paid full amount of taxes due
- Meet income requirements (determined by the State and adjusted annually)
- If you are already participating in this program, the application (blue booklet) will be mailed to you directly from the State. You do need to re-apply every year.
- If you would be applying for this program for the first time, applications will be available at the end of March from the Tax Collector.
