Residents of Fanwood and Scotch Plains gathered Friday night, Oct. 6, 2017, in the meditation garden of the Dhammakaya Temple on Midway Avenue in Fanwood for a vigil of remembrance for the victims of the Las Vegas shooting. Mayor Colleen Mahr hosted the event, which featured a poetry reading by Fanwood poet Tom Plante, a prayer and song by Pastor David Jahnke of Fanwood Presbyterian Church and readings of the names of those killed. Mayor Mahr issued an impassioned plea for common sense gun reform and a demand that mass shootings not be accepted as “the new normal.” Fanwood Council members Kathy Mitchell, Kevin Boris and Tom Kranz were in attendance, along with the Fanwood Rescue Squad.
