The Borough of Fanwood is extremely excited to announce that New Jersey Monthly Magazine has named Fanwood as New Jersey’s Best Small Town!

“After four suspense-filled rounds, Fanwood has emerged as the winner of New Jersey Monthly’s 2019 Small Town Showdown,” NJMonthly announced on Tuesday. “The Union County borough beat out Lambertville in a landslide.”

“A big and loud Thank you to all the Fanwood fans out there who voted to help us win New Jersey Monthly magazine’s Small Town Showdown!” exclaimed Mayor Colleen Mahr. “In Fanwood, we value our past while always looking to the future for ways to keep what has always defined Fanwood, a small town with a big heart, fresh and current. That love for our small town shone through these last few weeks during this friendly state wide competition. I am proud to be your mayor and can think of no better community to serve.”

Thank you to all the Fanwood fans out there who voted to help us win New Jersey Monthly’s Small Town Showdown. But more importantly, thank you to the residents, business owners and organizations who make this community a wonderful place to call home. You are truly the heart of our hometown and this is a recognition of everyone’s hard work over the last 15 years.

Fanwood would also like to thank New Jersey Monthly Magazine for including Fanwood in their initial list of “16 Small Towns We Love” in New Jersey.

“At the end of the day, this contest is a great recognition to what we’ve always known – what a wonderful place Fanwood is,” the mayor said. “Now, it’s clear that the rest of New Jersey knows it, too.”

The popular magazine applied two rules before narrowing their list, that the towns must have a population under 12,000, a median home price of $800,000 or less.

From there, the popular magazine “began looking at subjective factors and practical matters, including downtown amenities, quality schools, access to public transportation, varied housing stock, cultural and recreational attractions, and community sensibility,” the article explained.

Citing Fanwood’s tradition, detailed architecture, and community events, NJ Monthly called Fanwood “an oasis of charm.”

“Locally owned shops line the lively, walkable downtown,” the article said. “While it is ideal for burgeoning families, the recent development of smaller apartment units near the train station indicates a desire to attract younger commuters as well. The outdoor ice rink at LaGrande Park is a winter favorite.”

“We know why we love Fanwood, right? That’s why we choose to buy a home here, raise our kids here, support our local businesses, go to all our great events,” the mayor said. “So right now, Fanwood is in the Sweet 16 of small towns in the state of New Jersey … And I’d like to be the best small town in New Jersey. And in order to do that, I need your help. So how can you help put Fanwood literally on the map? By voting for us!”

Thank you for your votes and your support in making Fanwood New Jersey’s Best Small Town!!
